Wednesday 17 July ☆ 'Salsa Barrio Cultura Convergencia Digital' - Lecture and Discussion
A presentation by Colombian Salsa anthropologist Alejandro Ulloa (Universidad del Valle, Cali) of his recent co-authored work ‘Salsa Barrio Cultura Convergencia Digital’, a book and multimedia platform, which resembles an online Salsa museum. The whole work ascertains to the creation of a cultural collective memory in the city of Cali around Salsa and to how this popular urban expression is linked to other Salsa centres across the continent. ALEJANDRO ULLOA
Alejandro Ulloa is a permanent lecturer at the Social Communication School of the Universidad del Valle, Cali Colombia since 1980. He has a BA in literature and masters in linguistics and anthropology from the universities of Valle, Colombia and Universidade Estatal de Campinas, Brazil.
He has published 12 books on urban culture, dance and memory, among which stand out La salsa en Cali (Salsa in Cali) as the first compendium of the cultural history of salsa in that city and Salsa, Barrio, Cultura convergencia digital (Salsa, Barrio, Cultura – Digital convergence) book and hypermedia digital platform directed and produced by Alejandro showing the interconnections of salsa around the globe. He has also directed the documentaries Once Upon a Time... The Park of Music, Step by Step, and Dressed up to Dance. He is a knowledgeable explorer of the musical corner in Cali and an experienced rumbero, from which he nurtures his inspiration to continue his academic research.
